My Crazy Awesome 6″ x 24″ Tile

American Olean, incredible, tile

My family room is almost all tiled up… and… Wow! What a dang big/fine job. I really wanted to go with something different, out of the ordinary with my family room and decided to go with a very cool 6 x 24″ color body porcelain tile from American Olean. It’s dark lines and sleek modern look were exactly what I was after and I knew this flooring would be a huge plus to gather the passive solar rays coming in the windows and keep the lighting under control with my theater at night. Only thing I didn’t realize was what an incredible/humongous job it would be to lay these long narrow tiles and keep it all level and tight. Couple things really contributed to making this job a real challenge… 1st. The tile calls for a super thin 1/16 of an inch grout line that leaves little room for error. Everything has to line up perfectly from tile to tile, otherwise the differences in height is immediately obvious. 2nd. The tiles are so long and well, the concrete wasn’t exactly level and… So there were some ups and downs that needed to be contended with as the tile was laid. Thankfully, I had a very talented/patient person laying the tile who was willing to lay a few rows and then go back with the level pushing down tile to tile, wiggling them back and forth until everything was perfect and even. Can’t say I would’ve had enough patience to finish this great big floor.

Jerry layed the first two rows at the end of Monday night so that he’d have a firm foundation to push the next day’s work against.

A Few Days Later and We’re Halfway There

Almost All Done… Lovely Isn’t It!

Lots of other things happened during the week as well like the kitchen being finished up, the trim for my family room getting some coats of stain, and my bedroom floor getting laid. I’ll have lots of pictures of those to show you in a post sometime later this week.

Till then… I’m back to the Super Bowl… Oh wait… I don’t like football!
